Scott Adam's has a really good post about the manufactured outrage syndrome that is sweeping the world.

People are getting very accustomed to the recognition and popularity that comes with becoming upset over nothing. Perhaps it's a narcissism outbreak, perhaps it's a consequence of the new social media attention. The fact is, when everyone is connected anyone can contact many and perpetuate all sorts of nonsense. Even poorly written blogs.
My word for the same phenomenon was "emotionalism". People hearing something that vaguely offends their sensibilities and then they turn off their thinking portion of brain function and launch right into emotional attack mode, spinning arguments, warping quotes, and most unfortunately manufacturing rage.
